colorful region near bright star Antares is a dark cloud dubbed the Dark River, flowing from the picture’s left edge.
the Dark River’s appearance is caused by dust obscuring background starlight, although the dark nebula contains mostly hydrogen and molecular gas.
Surrounded by dust, Antares, a red supergiant star, creates an unusual bright yellowish reflection nebula. Above it, bright blue double star Rho Ophiuchi is embedded in one of the more typical bluish reflection nebulae, while red emission nebulae are also scattered around the region.
Globular star cluster M4 is just seen above and right of Antares, though it lies far behind the colorful clouds, at a distance of some 7,000 light-years.
The Dark River itself is about 500 light years away. This image spanning nearly 10 degrees (20 Full Moons) across the sky in the constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius).

رودخانه ای تاریک به قلب العقرب
منطقه ای رنگارنگ در نزدیکی ستاره درخشان آنتارس ، ابر تاریکی است که رودخانه تاریک نامیده می شود و از لبه سمت چپ تصویرشروع می شود
شکل ظاهری رودخانه تاریک ناشی ازسد شدن نور ستاره ها در پس زمینه توسط غبار های این ناحیه است ، اگرچه سحابی تاریک بیشتر حاوی هیدروژن و گاز مولکولی است
آنتارس ، یک ستاره ابرغول قرمز است ، که توسط گرد و غبار احاطه شده است ، و باعث ایجاد یک سحابی بازتابی زرد و شگفت انگیز شده است . بالاتر از آنتارس، ستاره دوتایی آبی روشن رو- مارافسای در یکی از سحابی های بازتابی متمایل به آبی مشاهده می شود ، در حالی که سحابی های نشری قرمز نیز در اطراف منطقه پراکنده شده اند
خوشه ستاره ای کروی ام ۴ دقیقاً در بالا و سمت راست آنتارس دیده می شود ، هرچند که نسبت به ما، در فاصله ی بسیار دورتری از این ابرهای رنگارنگ جای دارد و در فاصله حدود 7000 سال نوری از ما قرار دارد
و این در حالی است که رودخانه تاریک حدود 500 سال نوری با ما فاصله دارد
این نمای رنگین در حدود 10 درجه (20 ماه کامل) از آسمان واقع در صورت فلکی عقرب را پوشش می دهد
